Starting with less income at the beginning stage, restrictions on eating habits, and a low to zero guarantee of fixed income along with a hectic schedule.
Modeling is a competitive career. A model’s basic job is to display fashion and fashion is everywhere. It is connected to our lives in many ways and hence it has a strong influence on society and so does modeling. Fashion is said to be a projection of culture and society. Hence, it is a mirror of that society. It helps with the self-awareness role. This fashion is conveyed through models. Therefore, models are the reflection of our interests, our era, and our society.
Models as inspiration
Models are more than just some human hangers for stylish clothes. Youths of every generation look up to them for a fashion statement. They put lives into clothes and show how the clothes look on a human body. Fashion would never have been interesting if there were clothes only in stores folded on a rack. We are a society that spends a whole lot of money on beauty and looks presentable. Models help to give us a proper idea and advertise a large part of it.
Models are also a canvas to display various products. A good advertisement would result in a good sale and a profit for the seller. This helps in the economy of our country. Most of the advertisements work upon classical conditioning. A human besides a product helps the consumer to associate more with the product. This can be used to alter or change the choice of people living in a society.
Make or break
The majority of people use social media. This has increased the exposure and hence the amount of influence on the people has also increased. As most of them aspire to become as decent and attractive as the models they see daily, the whole picture of a society changes from bad to good and vice versa. A model can bring about a phase in a person’s life if it is appealing in a considerable amount. For instance, the plus-size model trend is spreading across the world like wildfire.
This has brought a change in the definition of beauty. A definition that is more than a century old. A model has the power to set a tradition and also to break it. We should not forget about breaking age-old beliefs such as gender roles.
Models with androgynous looks such as Andrej Pejic are a personification of gender equality movements. However, we cannot neglect the other side of the coin. There are many negative influences of the modeling profession on society. A generation being obsessed with unrealistic beauty standards and body measurements.
Models maintain a nutritious diet but people who are blindly following them starve themselves to fit in. On the other hand, the plus-size trend has led to an obesity pandemic, throughout America. On top of which lowering self-esteem and a generation of people not accepting themselves are some of the hazardous effects of the modeling profession on society.
Conclusion
We have seen a wide range of models from blond to brunette, from chubby to the wafer-thin body. This variety of models being equally popular, reflect our individualistic perspectives on ourselves. They depict our constantly changing moods, choices, and preferences as a society.
A model can give importance to any social movement for good. Whether we admit it or not, but fashion has surrounded all of us in one way or another. It has a command on our lives in ways we can not imagine. We all are vulnerable to drastic changes in lifestyle or culture if a stylist decides to do so.
