It was an iconic yet surprising moment when the 27-year-old singer Miley Cyrus joined the catwalk as the showstopper for Marc Jacobs in the New York Fashion Week show. Yes, it is always wonderful to see a known face in any event. You can see many famous models and artists walking as the showstopper in many fashion shows. If not a popular known face at least the most accepted face that fits into the beauty chart enacted by the society. The proportion of the stage was always only considerable for some marked faces. But the core of the stage is for all the competent models.
Stereotyping the Center Spotlight
The center stage stands to be the essence of a fashion show and the show stoppers are its soul. In the world of fashion, it is very important to showcase your creations to the world in ways like never before. For this reason, fashion week events exist. In these ramp walks, various fashion designers demonstrate their mastery through the models. Even the fashion trend starts from here.
Therefore, every model bears the responsibility to showcase the new trends charmingly. Still, there comes the difference when it is the matter of showstoppers. Generally, the big celebrities or the known artists or the popular models are facilitated to be a showstopper. However, focusing only on a specific category we sometimes miss the distinct talented models who can steal the show. That is what a showstopper does. They steal the gaze of the audience. But the policy of fitting into being a showstopper continues such as the model needs to fit into certain criteria. These benchmarks are nothing but the stereotypes set by society.
The expected beauty, shape, and size of the model should not be less than any Greek God. Society is never satisfied with the concept of beauty. The more they observe, the more they expect. That is why it is said, Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder. But the aspect the showstopper should possess is confidence and her ability to carry the costume. So, should not all models irrespective of their color, shape, and size have the right to exhibit their talent and be the showstopper?
The larger picture
Breaking the stereotypes, many fashionistas choose the distinctive path. Of course, unique things catch the vigilance of everyone. We saw eight months pregnant Maia Ruth Lee in the catwalk for designers Mike Eckhaws and Zoe Latta during the New York Fashion Week like a supermodel. Similarly, we can discover that many fresh models are potential enough to hold the stage responsibilities. Hence, we should bring alteration to the ongoing perspectives. The meaning of the word ‘showstopper’ is itself unique and attractive. And every model is unique in its way. So, why not expect to see various capable models in different shows as showstoppers? Maybe, we are moving towards that, watch out!
